1980 GS850GL Servie and Wiring Manuals

I'm looking for the service manual and wiring manual for an 80 gs850 GL. I checked on Basscliffs site and the "found them" forum, but cannot find either of these. Also looking for the user manual for the bike.

Does anyone know if one of the other manuals is used for the 850gl or where I can download these manuals? I've had no luck searching on the web for them...

    thanks

Because BassCliff has an 850, the manual is just above the large box that has all the others.

The User's Manual is for an '82, but isn't that much different.

This is what you want for the wiring manual for sure. Color with your year model schematic. This is the manual I have and used to do my restore. Well, that and this forum, and Cliff's site, etc.

      or....

Actually, the prices are better on the ones at BassCliff's site, and ... they are the real thing.

For the service manual, click HERE.

For the best wiring diagram, click HERE.

If you are looking for something that specifically says "GL" you have to go to page 330 of the pdf file (that is page 15-1 of the factory manual).

Virtually all of the mechanical stuff is the same between the G and the GL, just some of the cosmetics are different.

I saw the 850 stuff on basscliffs site and have the haynes manual already. I thought the G and GL would be pretty much the same, but wanted to be sure in case there is something major that I wasn't aware of. Thanks all.

Any of the major things where the G and the GL differ are plainly outllined in the factory manual.

I already gave you page numbers that directly reference the L model.

Just in case you were not aware, here are some of the differences between the G and GL:
                The G has:
                - front axle inline with forks
                - painted front fender
                - black headlight bucket with chrome rim and 7" light
                - gauges that are enclosed in a rubbery housing
                - "standard-height" handlebars
                - 5.8 gallon fuel tank
                - relatively flat (and VERY comfortable) seat
                - plastic cowl behind seat, covers the tail light
                - tail light hidden in the body work (cowl)
                - black plastic rear fender
                - mufflers that extend almost to the back of the rear wheel

                The GL has:
                - leading-axle front forks
                - chrome front fender
                - chrome headlight bucket with 6" light
                - individual speedo and tach
                - higher, pull-back (buckhorn) handlebars
                - 3.5 gallon fuel tank
                - stepped seat
                - no body work between seat and tail light
                - tail light mounted on rear fender
                - chrome rear fender
                - shorter mufflers that barely make it to the rear axle, different shape, too

Your '80 850L is a bit unique in that it is the only one that came with a 17" rear wheel. All the others came with a 17" wheel.

All of the mechanical stuff is basically the same. Probably the biggest difference is the front master cylinder, which is angled on the L to compensate for the higher pull-back bars. There will also be longer cables and brake lines on the L, so part numbers will be different, but maintenance and replacement procedures are the same.
