Winter projects. Heater?

I use a unit called Farenheat baseboard heater, it's an older one (like from the 80's), but I'm always amazed on how well this hydronic baseboard unit works in the garage.

It's about 11,000 BTU and works well in my 2-car, semi-insulated garage.

Uses just over a gallon of kerosene a day, if I leave it on full-time.

Even if it's down to 10 degrees (F) outside, it maintains 55-60 degrees in the garage.

It's also over 25 years old and still working well.

Very low maintenance also..just trim the wick and replace once it gets to short. tech tip..dont use diesel in it like my buddy did his. It burns fine, but the deposits on the wick ruin it in short order.

Another version of Steve's. very steady heat, almost no fumes and quiet. Even though I don't have garage I bought one to bring to the garage I borrow for car repair, but I can't store it there. They're in Craigslist quite a bit here, I bet you pick one up for 50-75 bucks

I have one of these if you want it .. They do work good ...Its about 15 years old I dont use it any more ....

Yes and no ... The one burner does not heat anuff .. Find a two burner...

Yep I bought a two burner one and used it the other day..works great. I just leave the garage door open a bit so the wife doesn't freak out. I paid $50 on sale 1/2 price at good ole Canadian Tire.

That's OK, we still don't know where you are and how bad the shipping would be.

I have one of the two burner propane tank heaters and it works great most of the time i only light one side run it on medium plenty warm in a 2 car garage it wont heat the whole garage but will keep the space your working around a bike nicely warm

Thanks for the offer! I think Steve is right that the shipping may be a lot, depending on where you are. Shoot me a PM or something. But right now I am probably leaning toward either the round tank-top ones or perhaps one of the "indoor use" kerosene or propane convection heaters. They are vertical cylindrical shaped, look nice and have good reviews for indoor use. About a hundred bucks; doesn't seem too shabby!

I heat up with this exact set-up.



Set up is very cheap, and fuel is free.
Very easily heats a 35'W x 40'L detached 2 car garage and keeps it toasty warm for hours with minimal effort.

Electric heaters are no match for -40

If you can find a smaller version of this, the wood heat will suck the moisture right off the tools as opposed to electric.
I'm regrettably using electric this winter. We'll see how that goes.

Funny you should mention smaller!
The kit for this comes with everything but the barrel, so you can use what ever sized drum you want.
I used a big 45 gallon drum but then my garage doors offer zero insulation and minimal wind protection.

I can keep it hot as a summer day in there.

You can use some old blankets and hang them from the gargae ceiling and curtain off a section to trap the heat and youll have less of a space to overcome in the cold. Heat the space up quicker and save some fuel costs as well.

Tank...check in with any local cabinet makers or contractors and ask them if you can gather thier scrap ends and such..good sources of free fuel for that stove.
