    Rusty spoke wheels

    I have 2 wire wheel suzuki's a GS1000n and a 81 Gsx1100.
    I have test cleaned the worst spoke I could find on the gsx and I am happy with the result.Used wd40 and a scotch pad as any factory coating was long gone.
    Now I need some advice on keeping the rust at bay.
    I was thinking just some paint polish now and then? any suggestions.

    I was thinking of using a clear coat from Caswell and seeing how that worked but I haven't tried and tested it yet. I'll be interested in seeing what you come up with that works well other than new stainless steel spokes.

      After I cleaned mine, I had them powdercoated.

        Zinc plate them. That's how they left the factory (though when it left the factory it had the thinnest possible coat to save money) and it's cheap and easy to do.

        Or just buy new ones.

          You can get a new spoke set from Mike XS that fit.

          Mikes XS is the leading supplier of Yamaha XS650 Parts and Vintage Yamaha motorcycle parts. Filters, Chassis, Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Engine products are just some of the items we carry.


          Relacing might be tough, but you'll need many hours to derust them enough to apply any coating

          Don't know if these heavy chemicals are available in AU

              I can have them relaced with stainless steel spokes here for $200 each which includes spokes.
              The rest of the bike has a 31 year patina but is totally original including paint only the exhaust and seat cover has been replaced so I thought it might sort of spoil it if it had bead blasted hubs polished rims and brand new stainless spokes.Just cleaned up wheels but still obviously original was the goal as I have another gsx11 that is going to get a total ground up rebuild to glamour status.
              Just don't want them to rust up again too fast.
