      Jeepster...I was gonna suggest that he replace them with bolts...much easier to remove in the future..even with the semi permanent loctite.

        Most of the gunge in the bottom of the sump is from the clutch plates which is why the service manual states to drop the sump and clean it every 6,000 miles. That clutch gunge is abrasive and if left there long term is slowly wearing down the internal components of the engine, just like lapping paste for valves and seats.

        Have used stainless allen head bolts in my screen for years and without loctite or other bond agents, cheers.

          Good to learn all this. I went with 10mm bolts and blue loctite. And I cleaned the plate so well I 'd eat off it.

            Why did you bother to drill them out and tap them for such LARGE bolts?

            The ones that were in there were 6mm bolts and were plenty adequate for the small job of holding the screen.

            By the way, bolts are measured by the diameter of the threaded end, not the size of the wrench needed to turn them.

              Yes....but they have a 10MM head on them.......which is what he meant.

                Yes, that's what I meant.

                But, it should be pretty obvious there's a LOT I don't know about mechanics! Including how to properly describe a bolt

                I'd be totally lost without all the help from everyone on the GSResources forum.

                  4mm bolt or screw has a 1.0 thread pitch and either philips or 7mm head
                  6mm bolt or screw has a 1.25 thread pitch and either #2 Philips or 8mm head
                  8mm bolt or screw has a 1.5 thread pitch and either #3 Philips or 10mm head
                  10mm bolt has a 1.5 thread pitch and is a 12mm head.
                  12mm bolt has a 1.5 thread pitch and a 14mm head.
                  14mm bolt has a 1.5 thread pitch and 17mm head.

                  There you go, not really much else for bolt sizes or types. Anything on a gs falls into one of those.
                  Except for oil plugs Those are 12mm with 17mm head and a 1.25 thread pitch

                  A 10mm bolt could have a Philips head or 12mm head or Allen head. Describing them by the head doesn't really say enough about the bolt.

                  But knowing the diameter and the thread pitch and length gives you the option to choose any head type you want

                  Allen head bolts seem to be the favorite for cases and anything visual.

                    Most 8mm on these Suzukis are 1.25mm thread pitch.

                          And NONE of them have a "Phillips" head, they are JIS.
