air box cover

hi guys
dose you know if a gs850gt airbox cover will fit a gs1000gt airbox even though the part numbers are different, i tried posting this in the technical section but could not get access

What years are you talking about?

If the part numbers are different, there's a good chance that the covers are not interchangeable.

With "GT" in both model names I'm assuming they are both 1980 models.

Are you talking about the chromed end covers of the airbox?

In looking at the part numbers and cross-reference at alpha-sports.com, the part numbers are different and don't show as being cross-compatible.

But so much about those two bikes is the same I would be rather surprised if those particular parts would not fit. The 1000GT uses BS34SS carbs and the 850GT uses BS32SS carbs but I can't see that making a big difference between the airboxes.

But don't take my word for it. If the parts are cheap, why not give it a try? If they don't fit you can always sell them.

Yes I am also missing a air box cover/lid on my 1100 gs1100e. In the parts fisch there is no seperate part number for it. So I think I will just make one out some plastiic or sheet metal. Should work ok.

Those are really scarce but occasionally come up on E-bay.
There was a thread awhile back where one guy fabricated one and I thought he was going to mass produce them to sell.

Mine was missing when I got the bike. I started out just using duct tape to cover it. Apparently a popular mod but it makes the bike difficult to start when cold. I eventually fabricated one using a sheet of ABS plastic and two-sided foam tape to seal the mating surfaces.

Thats a great idea.......you mean hard to start with lid on? People must be removing them and losing them or having them for a afternoon snack.

I just went out to the garage and did some comparing. The 1000 cover has a wider lip that wraps farther around the side of the box. They appear to be compatible. I don't see why that flange would need to be bigger or how it would interfere. Whichever one you find to put on will probably still need to have some foam added to get it to seal.

Myself mine is missing top cover that provides access to the air filter. Will I need that hole covered when I tune and sync my carbs ?

We really should not be hijacking this thread because it is about the chrome side covers on an 8 valve engine, but we are almost done. My apologies to the OP.
The top lid on an 1100E is an integral part of the air intake system. Removing it makes an engine that was delivered lean to begin with even more lean. This is a bad thing. Reinstalling it makes it less lean, although I also suggest doing the washer mod as well to richen it slightly more.
Doing these two things will let you balance and synch the carbs far easier and better than leaving it the way it is.
Hopefully someone has a link to some washer mod threads, there have been numerous over the years.

Unless you are talking about the needle mod in the carb tutorial. Think I will just start with making a lid, finish carb clean and go from there. Thanks

I now have a GS1000E air cleaner cover on my '82 GS1100E. Fits like a glove, absolutely perfect.

This is the reason I had to have it replaced, the '82 GS1100E cover I had was aftermarket I think, it was screened. Talk about air leaks!
