I know you didn't ask for opinions but even if the bike was free, a non running bike can get real expensive in a hurry
Does anyone know how to convert that into a model/year?
I got it running and have now stripped it down...the fun begins!77 gs750

engine numbers for a 1979 gs750 started at 74016
1980 cam ends were rectangular and yours appear to be round, so my best guess it's a 1979 engine

That's great you have it running. That right cover still puzzles me, so does the clutch cable actually go into the left side?

Thanks for that. The cover is strange. The clutch cable wasn't fitted but the one supplied works with the cover on there in terms of fitment but it doesn't engage the clutch. Inside the cover there is a a threaded shaft sticking out of the middle of the clutch which would work with the spindle sticking out the top.
However on the other side the thin shaft with the little spring for the clutch is also present!
Also if it helps identification there is a cam guide wheel attached to little block in the middle on top of the cam cover.77 gs750

I was wrong about the pedal being the problem
The 8V 750 has a clutch actuating mechanism in the sprocket cover on the left side of the bike, it's behind the small plate there. It pushes a rod that goes completely thru the transmission shaft and pushes the clutch plate out to release
That clutch cover must be from a 79 850, as that's the only one with a kickstart and the clutch actuator on the top1978 GS 1000 (since new)
1979 GS 1000 (The Fridge, superbike replica project)
1978 GS 1000 (parts)
1981 GS 850 (anyone want a project?)
1981 GPZ 550 (backroad screamer)
1970 450 Mk IIID (THUMP!)
2007 DRz 400S
1999 ATK 490ES
1994 DR 350SES

The only thing im confused on is the clutch cover with the splined shaft coming out by the oil fill for the clutch that is not right for a 77-79 750. It is a 8 valve motor so it might have a shaft motor swaped to chain?

Maybe post a couple more pics(left side case, cylinder head cover) that may help.
The only RH case cover I see with that configuration is off an 850.
That cylinder head cover is odd also, I can't believe someone would grind off the end cap mounting holes.

Here is a picture of the engine out of the bike i already have but not of the left side.

To bad it's so far away, but having free labor sure makes up for it.
Why do you have the engine off the bike?
One nice thing about these 8 valve engines, '77-'79 the parts are the same.
I'd be keeping an eye out for a good used RH case cover cause that never belong on that engine.

That is clearly a 79 850 clutch cover, as posted previously. I have a couple of questions on that:
Inside the cover should be a clutch actuator rod. Is there one inside there?
Since the 750 had a pushrod which went from the right side across the transmission to the clutch, what is covering the hole where the pushrod used to be?
Also, the sprocket cover should have a place where the clutch cable was inserted, and a worm gear which actuated the clutch mechanism. Is it still there, or was the sprocket cover replaced as well? A picture of that side would probably be helpful.

Free labour certainly is good. He knows his stuff but never on one of these, and the mixture of parts is slightly confusing!
The engine is out as doing a full build on it once a baseline of what we actually have is worked out.
I have asked him to take pictures of the left side (it does still have the original covers with the hole in the top for the cable) and inside both sides so will add them as soon as i can.
Thanks for your time!77 gs750
