When he pulls the small cover off the left side he'll find the little spring and cable lever that actuates the clutch.
You should be able to find a decent right side 750 cover on ebay or off a parts bike pretty reasonable.
I'm curious about that swing arm, but your going about it the right way by taking care of the engine and trans. first.
If your still worried about what motor it is, pull the cam cover and count the valves. You already know from the engine stamp it's a GS750. '77-'79 have 8 valves ..end of mystery.
It will be interesting to see what you and your Dad build.....have fun!

Thanks for the replies, hopefully it will be a nice one once finished but i dont want to go too far without knowing what were dealing with!

With regard to the swingarm, I have bought the correct one off eBay but the pivot bolt I have is too big to go through the 77 bearings. It seems the frame has been bored out to take a larger swingarm bolt. Argh!

Here are some pictures of the clutch parts. You will note that the clutch actuator release is not there on the left side and on the right side there is a splined shaft sticking out the end which would link with the one sticking out the top of the casing as seen in earlier pictures.

Can you see what is missing or what would need changing to get it back to 77 750 spec?

      Thanks for your help everyone!

the rod with the spring by the sproket is the stock clutch actuator, the piece with the teeth on the other side is for the clutch cover that was on the motor when you got it. What do you want this bike to be when your done? Its not impossible but this would be a hard bike to restore to 100% orignal. I would leave the 1100 swingarm on the bike its a nice upgrade which saves you some weight and is much stronger.

If you haven't already down load the sevrvice manual from basscliff's web site its an factory manual and will show the stock clutch and how it works.

So on the right side, you'll need the correct case cover. That splined shaft coming out of the pressure plate looks like a clutch release off an 850. If you look at a 750 parts fiche you'll see it should be a push piece(part no.23121-45000) Everything else on the right side should be ok, they both look to use the same clutch parts according to the parts fiche. The left side that push rod looks wrong, it should be just a smooth rod that sticks out more and fits into the clutch release that's attached to the case cover.(part no. 23110-45001) You don't have a pic of the LH case cover so I can't see if your missing the rest of the clutch release parts. Look at a parts fiche for a 750 under clutch release, it will show you what you need.
I have no idea how much work is involved changing this back to stock.

Thanks bigsky, here is another confusing part! The cam guide wheel doesn't look like any other I have seen. I can't find one that looks like this anywhere. You can also see the cam cover has been hacked around under that top cover...nothing seems to be as it should!

Also now realised it has 850 pistons and the head is different to normal. See the last picture.

Wow...I don't know what the previous owner was smokin, but he shouldn't have worked on his bike after he smoked it!
So are you going to proceed with this project or find another bike? To me this looks like a royal headache and a money pit.
