    Replacing/Repairing Fuel Gauge Float Assembly?

    Hi folks,

I've got an '83 GS1100E (purchased in 2009). The fuel gauge has never worked properly due to a wonky float assembly. I simply relied on the trip meter to keep track of fuel consumption. Depending on how easy or hard I rode I could get up to 155 miles before I had to fill up again. I also changed the solid fuel petcock so I could have a little reserve.

This Spring I finally decided to make a serious effort to get the fuel gauge to operate accurately. I checked the resistance of the fuel float assembly with an ohm meter and found that the values varied wildly when the float arm was raised or lowered. There were also some flat spots where the resistance simply dropped to zero.

My first thought was to buy a completely new assembly from Suzuki but found that the entire fuel float assembly is discontinued and no individual components are available either.

So I took a chance and purchased a used assembly from eBay. This item arrived today, and though it is in much better shape than my original unit, it too has inconsistent resistance values and flat spots across the sweep of the float arm.

My question is whether the wiper unit can be disassembled and the wiper contact cleaned?

    Any insights would be appreciated.

    Regards

    Jeff

    First of all,

Second, yes, it can be repaired. Click HERE to see the tutorial in the library.

I would also suggest going to the GS Owners forum to introduce yourself. Our resident librarian, BassCliff, will give you the full mega-welcome.

      Success!

      Steve,

GS Resources to the rescue again!

Thanks for pointing me to the fuel float assembly tutorial. After reading the instructions and carefully disassembling and servicing the wiper assembly I was able to get a smooth change in resistance across the entire sweep of the float arm. The refurbished unit goes into the gas tank tomorrow.

Actually I'm not a new member, but a returning member (Big Red) who hadn't been active here for a while. I first came here back in 2009 in search of a fix for my crappy charging system. Your "Stator Papers" tutorial on trouble-shooting was spot on. It led me to a new stator and regulator from ElectroSport and things electrical have been fine ever since.

      Thanks again.

      Regards

      Jeff

        Hi Mr. Red Beast,

In order to compliment the information on the GSR homepage, my little website has grown quite a bit since 2009. Feel free to visit and peruse all of the resources. You'll find just about everything you need for the care and feeding of a 30+ year old GS motorcycle.

        Welcome back.

        Thank you for your indulgence,

        BassCliff
