I've got an '83 GS1100E (purchased in 2009). The fuel gauge has never worked properly due to a wonky float assembly. I simply relied on the trip meter to keep track of fuel consumption. Depending on how easy or hard I rode I could get up to 155 miles before I had to fill up again. I also changed the solid fuel petcock so I could have a little reserve.
This Spring I finally decided to make a serious effort to get the fuel gauge to operate accurately. I checked the resistance of the fuel float assembly with an ohm meter and found that the values varied wildly when the float arm was raised or lowered. There were also some flat spots where the resistance simply dropped to zero.
My first thought was to buy a completely new assembly from Suzuki but found that the entire fuel float assembly is discontinued and no individual components are available either.
So I took a chance and purchased a used assembly from eBay. This item arrived today, and though it is in much better shape than my original unit, it too has inconsistent resistance values and flat spots across the sweep of the float arm.
My question is whether the wiper unit can be disassembled and the wiper contact cleaned?
Any insights would be appreciated.
Regards
Jeff
