Need the Right Feeler Gauge Set

I need the proper feeler gauge set to check the gap on the valves of my 1983 GS450E. The Suzuki set is no longer available, which is part number 99923-68042-LPT.

It turns out that most feeler gauge sets don't come with fellers thin enough to measure the gaps for the engine.

Does anyone know where I can get either the Suzuki part or some new equivalent?

Most any auto parts store will have a set that is calibrated in INCHES, not metric, and goes down to .0015". The minimum specified clearance is about .0012", and by the time you get down that tight, you might as well change shims anyway.

Some purists will say "the bike is built with metric specifications, use metric tools", and they can say that and furnish their own toolboxes accordingly.
I have always used INCH feelers and my valves somehow end up "in spec".

By the way, if you take advantage of the offer in my sig, you can use either INCH or metric feelers.

Most cheap inch size felers are marked in a metric equivalent, and most of these sets go down to .036mm, plenty small enough for us.

I keep .001" shim stock in my toolbox. Any machine shop will give you a piece. Take scissors to it and make your own feelers.

I found a set of detachable metrics at pep boys. 7 bucks.

Most motorcycle shoppes will have a display of Bikemaster tools, and one of these will be a set of metric feeler gauges that go down to .03mm. You can also find Bikemaster tools from many online retailers.

Of course, as stated above, you can use either inch or metric gauges as long as you keep the conversions straight. And you don't really need the .03mm gauge, because if it's that tight you should change it anyway -- it's safer to run clearances a bit wide (up to .10 or .11mm) if needed than to risk one going below .03mm.

Personally, I prefer to use metric feelers simply because there's a bit less to remember, but it's certainly not mandatory.

They changed the part number to 09900-20806, but Boulevard, anyway, says that number is NLA as well, pity, because it is a really nice set, with extras of the thinner blades. If you 'Bingle-that number, AlphaSports has a nice special tools page, but they're out of the Suzuki biz, is that right?

Yes, they are, but please remember that they are still made to INCH specifications, not metric.

I don't think I have ever seen a set of metric feelers that have had the inch equivalent on them.
