    Oil level after oil change

So I'm doing an oil change here and wondering what's up with the oil level. It's always bugged me; happened on the first change too. Manual states 3.4 US quarts with a filter change. I measured this exactly, idled for a bit, turned the bike off and waiting for the oil to come up to the F mark. It's not even close! It's hovering around the low mark right now after about 20 minutes of waiting.

Is it possible that it's taking longer to "settle" because I'm using the heavier weight Rotella 15W40 oil? Or maybe the engine didn't get hot enough?

I don't want to overfill. Should I just go for a ride and see where it settles after that?

About at the half way point after the few minutes it took to come inside and write this post.

I would have guessed that amount for an oil change without filter change but my bike is an 1100.

I find working on my motorcycle mildly therapeutic when I'm not cursing.

let the engine get warmer, and then leave it longer before you check the level again. at least 30 minutes

Cool, that's what I was hoping the answer might be.

Yeah that's a bit bigger of an engine than mine

if it still needs a drop to get it up to the correct level after 30 minutes then dont be afraid to add it.
make sure the bike is level, on the mainstand if you have one.

IF you get it too full and you have a mighty vac, you can stick the suction tube in to the bottom of the clutch cavity and suck some out.

I would think a turkey baster with some tubing on the end would do the same thing. I have used my mighty vac to remove a little extra from my bikes.

The oil should be COLD when you check it.

Suzuki service manual procedure: bike on center stand, add oil, run engine at idle for several seconds (long enough to distribute oil though engine), shut down engine, wait one min., check oil level, add oil till F mark.

I use a baster to remove too much fluid/oil, but the mini vac would be handy!

Did as agemax suggested and it appeared to be right on the money. Thanks!

You checked it wrong. Won't hurt anything though so no big deal.

I find it takes a long time for oil to drain back down to sump AND be obvious in sight glass (I wait two hours if I need to know exactly). There also appears to be some minor variation due to secondary drive cavity on the 650. I aim for full mark.
