Another big vote for stainless allen-heads.
I replaced my last GS850's carb bolts with them as the old ones needed slotting with a dremel just so I could take them out with a regular blade screwdriver... needless to say I wasn't putting them back in like that.

I'm surprised that only a few posts have mentioned JIS. None of the screws on these bikes are Phillips, as far as I know. JIS screws might look like Phillips, but using a Phillips driver will strip them in short order. McMaster Carr sells a JIS driver kit (#1, #2 and #3) made by Vessel for about $30 and are perfect for anyone working on old Japanese bikes (or cars). Normal Phillips impact drivers also tend to have stubby bit tips which fit JIS fasteners better than standard drivers.
That being said, Allen fasteners have the benefit of requiring easily packable hex keys that can get into tight spots, so I use them wherever I can.

Steve's pics are (almost) a lie. I've seen that bike look that pretty, and I've seen it after a few thousand mile trips. Last I saw it, it looked like an oily mess of a top end rebuild (oil leaks).
Polishing isn't necessary, but excessive grime does inhibit cooling.Dogma

You can go in to the User CP section and set your preferences to show 40 posts per page.

I choose to stay with OEM JIS screws
I am rebuilding a GS1000S and needed to decide on Allen Head screws, or staying with the OEM screws which as mentioned previously are JIS.
Once I purchased these it was an easy decision to stay with the factory OEM screws.
On my 2012 Vstrom I fitted SW Mototech equipment which came with Allen Head screws and bolts, not really impressed, as some of them started to round out the 2nd time I removed and reinstalled them.
I also have some German Made Wera drivers which are good but not quite as tight fitting as the Vessel drivers.

The valve covers on my Wing are chromed, so I did not have to do anything there.
The covers on my 850 have not yet been addressed, but will be in another month or three.
