    GS400 owners &/or workshop manual

I'm stranded waaaaaay down in Australia where they've never heard of the the GS400 so parts, resources and knowledge is limited. I'm wondering if any kind person can help me out with a PDF of the owners manual and/or workshop service manual which covers the 1980 GS400?

    Cheers.

I'm assuming you have the twin cylinder 2-valve model?

It's a twin cyl, how do I tell the valves? The stamp on the bike is GS 400 and date it was issued in Australia is Sept 1980.

I'm pretty sure that's a 2-valve model. The small covers on the end of the camshaft cover - are they round or approximately rectangular? Round = 2 valves/cylinder.

Thanks Steve, awesome site. I can see myself becoming a pest here with questions very quickly! Just ordered some parts via the UK today, such a shame I've got to ship a £2 part all the way out to the colonies here.

You're welcome. At some stage Basscliff will be along with a full intro. Set aside a couple of quiet evenings for some light reading!

Ha! Brilliant. I'm looking forward to it. I was thinking about tarting it up a little, what is the consensus here on molesting these bikes? I've seen some good looking cafe racer mods but I was thinking of heading down the WWII-military-jump-the-barbed-wire-fence mods. Is this a forum for the purists and should I keep my mods to myself or.....?

Most of the members here tend toward the 'original, but with sensible modifications' style. But there have been some high quality cafe/bobber type machines featured. There have also been some abominable aberrations which make you question the sanity (not to mention will to live!) of the builder. Basically, it's your bike, do it your way.

Hey mate, don't worry about originality, just make sure whatever you do is done right and safely... have a look at my 450 thread in my signature, it's not quite stock but close.

Just realised... you probably don't have a compliance plate so it probably is a 77/78 GS400 that was only sold in 1980 which would explain that.

You have an excellent parts source down there, www.mickhone.com.au. Good prices and service! They're the gold source for the Katana guys I ride with.

Also, check out eBay seller "eClassic Bike" as he will likely have a factory reproduction manual for a good price.

I'll second Mick Hone, bit closer for me than for Pete though.

also look here, when you figure out which engine you have (2x valve per cyl="GS" or 4xvalves per cyl="GSX"). If it's the "GSX" you also want the gsx250 manual to go with the gsx400 manual.

Also as mentioned, goto http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff, where I believe the Clymer is best one for GS and the Haynes is definitely bestfor GSX
