shim missing in bucket
Ok, I did the almost unpardonable atrocities while adjusting valves on my GS1000. Momentarily lost concentration and turned the motor over without a pad in the bucket. Turned it over with a wrench instead of the starter so I was able to stop when I felt it lockup. So I thought I would slip a quarter under the cam and use my large flat blade screw driver and twist it to gain enough clearance to put the quarter in. Could not get enough clearance to slip the quarter in because of the angle. Decided to use a nickel since it was very near the thickness of the quarter. Decided to cover the cam chain area and any other possible places flying coins could go. Several times the cam pinched the nickel and shot it out from under the cam. Fortunately my screwdriver has shoulders near the handle that I could get a wrench on to assist my twisting efforts to gain enough space for the nickel to fit. With the GS1000G on the side stand and the nickel on the upside of the screwdriver I finally found success and was able to correctly shim the valve. Tomorrow is start up day after going through the carbs and regaining compression after valve adjustments.Tags: None

Had you not thought to place the factory valve adjusting tool on that tappet to free the cam lobe?

I did occur to me to use the tool. Problem is I do not have the tool. I use the zip tie method under the valve face.

Did fire up my GS1000G today after valve adjustments and thorough carb rebuild. The wheels are wheelin, the crank is crankin, that carbs are carbun and the pistons are uh oh. Now I need fine tuning the carbs, air pressure in the tires and ....wait for the snow to melt. Put volt meter on battery and charging system seems fine. I do have seat issues that I will try to find a thread that is more suitable for seats.

If you did you have already destroyed your cam and you sir should have all your tools removed from your garage and ban from working on anything ever again. This is dumbest thing I have ever heard of someone doingMy stable

I have reread my post and I am not sure how you came to the conclusion that I started it with a nickle in place of a shim pad. Now you Sir, I think you know the honorable thing to do now. Meanwhile, I think I will take a shakedown ride this morning.
