Oil Temp reading incredibly high

Hey everyone, I am new to these forums and recently bought an 82 750e as my first bike. Sorry if this has been answered before, but I didn't find an answer using the search or google.

My oil temp gauge consistently reads high. Even with the bike turned off, it sits around 220 and will get up to around 320 when I am driving. I am convinced that my oil is not getting anywhere near that hot, otherwise I would be having other issues. Should I just ignore this or is it a pretty simple fix? My understanding is that normal riding temp should be around 160.

I'd say my oil is normally at 220 degrees during a good run- these critters run hot, so keep moving!

Sounds like you need a new gauge or maybe temp sensor. You may want to perform a test by removing the sensor and dunking it into boiling water.

BTW, my 1000S runs upwards of 300F when at highway speeds in 80F air. There is a reason most later generation GS's came with an oil cooler.

Didn't have enough cooling fins.

I'd fix the gauge.
