I'd have to go home first, I'm in Michigan now, probably won't be able to get the parts for quite a while.

Here is the maintenance schedule for the GS1100. Highlighted the oil change and also valve adjustment, because so many people neglect this.

if I take oil change as being right i'll be doing a oil change and filter (engine) weekly after each ride. is this the same for the 1000 chain drive ?
going to get costly to run

That's what I was thinking, too.

I thought I was riding a lot when I did 27,000 in a year, several years ago.

                3500 a week is 182,000 per year.

I read that as engine and filter change/ replace every 1000 k which I will be doing with ease weekly once able to ride again

Engine oil should be changed at 600 miles with a new bike, then every 3500 miles thereafter. This is the same interval that the valves should be checked. Failure to perform maintenance like this will result in engine damage so follow the book.

Big brother it sucks you had the secondary go but I wanted to thank you for posting on it. I just drained and refilled mine and while there was no metal shards the oil in it and the rear hub was beyond disgusting. So by your hard lesson the rest of us may be saved.
