    Crack in oil pan

    I have been tracking a small oil leak around the area of my drain plug area for awhile now. I recently tried an oversized plug and, while it fits and seems snug, I've noticed something else that I previously missed: a hairline crack beginning at the base of the drain plug hole and continuing up for about half an inch. On the 1979 GS425 series, unlike many of the other series, the drain plug hole is nearer to the back of the cylinder and (seemingly) more apt to serious structural damage. Additionally, from a brief overview of the way everything is setup, the oil pan is not easily removed like on other models. I have been searching ebay for a replacement but have found nothing. I have checked the fiche diagrams and cannot find the piece I am looking for (oil pan). Can anyone help out and track down the part number for me or find a diagram so that I can more accurately troubleshoot this issue? Thanks in advance, as always. I am so close to finishing this beast. I will post pictures for everyone when it's all completed.

    The oversized plug cracked the pan? Who'd a thunk it? Why can't the pan come off? Easy to fix with JB or something if it's off.

      Yeah... Whether it was there or not, the OS plug was a hail Mary before physically taking the pan off. I think I have to take the engine out to access it but really have no idea. Never used jb weld. I know you're a huge contributor on the forums and even helped me in the past - maybe you've had a similar model and might know? I'm pretty sure there is no easy access pan.

        Don't know much about a 425, mine is a 450 which has a different pan. Is the pan too wide to come out between the frame rails?

        It's not all that hard to pull the engine out. Takes an hour or so with two guys working.

          That's what I mean - I don't see a pan. The pan looks like it's the entire bottom side of the crankcase. I have to pull the engine at some point but was hoping to drag through the summer before having to do so.

            Have a threaded steel insert put in your oil drain hole, you'll never strip another drain plug. That is if your pan isn't cracked beyond repair. Though maybe the JB would be fine. If you have to get another oil pan, I would still do the threaded steel insert to prevent any stripping. I forgot, what may look like a crack could be a casting inperfection. Look at it bery bery closely.

New SS fasteners through out. Rebuilt carbs, new EBC clutch springs and horn installed. New paint. Motor runs strong.

              I'm not sure how extensive the damage is yet. Anyone have info on the pan or replacement part I'd need, worst case scenario?

                Um, hang on.
                I just bought a oil pan and gasket to replace mine since i have to loctite the plug.
                I thought I could just take the old one off and put the new one in?
                Whats this about a crankcase and taking the engine out?

                  I hope I stand incorrect but I don't see a removable oil pan on the GS425. It is different from both the GS400 and GS450 in this respect. Please tell me I'm wrong.
