Loose Wheel Bearing
I have a very loose wheel bearing on the rear wheel drive side. I can pull it out by hand. Anyone know what could have caused this and/or how to fix it? Looks like the wheel hub has worn down quite a bit. I'm thinking about scrapping the wheel and buying one used. How bad is it do ride on it until I get the new wheel in (not on the highway, less than 50mph)?Tags: None

Its a dicey situation that I wouldnt risk on my own rear end ( the one i sit on ). I would get the replacement rim and put new bearings in it and refrain from riding on a known bad rim. Just my 2 cents worth.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

If the rim isn't cracked and the damage to the bearing bore is even all the way around, you could shim the bearing with shim stock or epoxy.
However, much of the time in these cases there's a crack in the wheel and/or quite a bit of damage to the bore from a seized bearing in the past (so it'll never be quite centered), so a replacement wheel might be the way to go.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

Brass bushing stock or a speedi-sleeve but either solution would cost close to a good used rim in time.effort. Find a rim. Which model and wheel position again as I have a bunch if no one else does.
Edit: '81 650E Certainly.

Happened to my Nighthawk. Bike felt like I was riding with a flat tire, really creepy. The bearing would wobble with the least bit of pressure.
A replacement wheel off of eBay was the only solution. Cheap, too.and God said, "Let there be air compressors!"

Used Loctite bearing lock on my 1000S rear wheel and it did the trick. Have a spare wheel undergoing restoration but the original is holding up well so I haven't bothered to finish the job.Ed
