My speedometer starts jumping all over the place when I go above 70.Any ideas as to what it could be.Have been told it could be inside the clocks,I have a 1980 550L with clocks would the speedometer from it fit the 1982 850L.Could it be carb balancing needed?.Conan1983 GS 650 gl

Definately not carb balancing unless it's nothing more than a slight vibration of the needle. If the needle is sweeping at a constant speed, then something is binding. Check your speedometer cable for kinks or cuts. Pull the cable out of the sheath and check it again for kinks or bad spots. Clean and lubricate the cable and re-install it in the sheath. Lubricate the speedometer mechanisms. Now go and ride it. If the problem persists, try swapping out your speedometer gear assembly. I don't know if they use plastic gears that would wear enough to have gear slack- that could cause the condition you describe.
