Cleaning inside headlight lens cover

Guys,

I have 1981 GS850G and I notice inside of headlight lens is foggy/dirty. Anyone have experience taking apart and cleaning in there?

If it is still a stock light, then it is a glass lens with an H4 bulb in the reflector. You should be able to remove the lens/reflector assembly from the housing, remove the bulb, then find something to stick in there and wipe the inside of the glass.

Please note that the reflector is likely the cause of the fogginess, not the lens. There is virtually nothing you can do to restore shine to a reflector, so be VERY careful that you don't damage it when trying to wipe the inside of the lens.

Remove bulb. Spray some glass cleaner inside followed by a rag. Use a plastic or wood stick to move the rag around until clean, then remove the rag. I've done with with several GS headlamps as well as a Kawasaki and it makes a noticeable difference.

Yeah...i suspected thats all I could do...thx. And thanks for warning me about reflector...that would stink to crack that!

Oh, you are not going to crack it, just that it is specially-polished aluminum. Anything you might use to wipe it off will scratch it and possibly fog it even worse.

Some of those reflectors are a coating or plating of some kind, like chrome. My grandson's old Yamaha has a lousy light we have to replace because it's all peeling off.

Yup.......mine have always come out looking new after the above procedure.
