The reason I inquired about solvent is because I left some carb mixture screws sitting in acetone for a short while in place of carb cleaner, & the o-rings swelled up triple their size & started popping apart!!! Not all solvents are neoprene/viton/rubber safe. Gasoline for starters maybe??? Then denatured alcohol? AutoZone engine degreaser???

Best solvent for cleaning an o-ring chain???
What is the best solvent for cleaning an o-ring chain??? I want to get it spotless & degreased well so that I can fog a mist of black appliance epoxy paint on it. trying to do a real budget build & I have this old 630 with only a few thousand miles & zero stretch, & a very nice mirror polished CNC aluminum Drag Specialties 630 sprocket. Building up a bike on a budget for a friend for 1 season. After we get it on the road for the 1st season, next winter he'll be upgrading things like shocks, 530 conversion, cartridge emulators, etc... I know the Al sprox won't last more than 10,000 miles.

Mineral spirits or kerosene (as recommended in the factory service manual). Then wipe down the outside with brake cleaner or similar on a rag before painting (which seems like a bad idea but it's your choice).Last edited by Nessism; 12-29-2014, 08:29 PM.Ed

I was just going to fog a few light coats on the faces of the plates, as there is a little rust showingaround the pins where the gunk isn't caked on much. Maybe just scrubbing it up & then hitting it with an old buffing wheel would suffice, followed by regular use of a good dry chain lube film. Thanks for the feedback fellas'77 GS750 920cc heavily modded

Tooth brush and parts brushes with simple green will clean it up. Good day or two in vinegar will eat the rust away and not damage orings.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

Once its cleaned and desrusted I would think the new chain lube would also act as a rust inhibitor..yes????MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)

May want to roll it up in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and swish the snot out of it with some of the simple green to get as much gunk out of the rollers and pins too. Use the air hose to blow it off and such.MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
