Delayed Throttle Response and Hanging Idle

I have a 1982 GS550 That I cleaned the carbs at least a dozen times on. set the points as per the manual. I have also done a lot of work on it including new head gasket, base gasket, lightly honed the cylinders, new spark plugs. I set mechanical timing as per the manual as well triple checked my work.

The bike starts hard and only with full choke when it is cold then the rpms will skyrocket to 5,000rpm and usually when I lower the choke it will stall.

After a minute or so it will idle fine around 1200rpm but then when I try to crack the throttle it doesn't respond then the rpms jump up and hang then slowly drop.

The carb boots are all fine with no tears.

Air box is sealed as well as I can get it, I ended up using ultra black rtv to seal the lid.

What did I miss? Where else could the problem lie.

    Could it be ignition related?

Oh yeah I also set valve lash to spec.

Carb boots are fine... how are the O-rings behind them?

The o rings are new as well.

The only other thing a can think of is the choke plunger o rings. Could that be my problem.

Sure, but it seems more likely that "choke " plungers are not fully retracting, allowing air bypass- make sure cable isn't sticking ,especially in this cold weather

Is the air filter installed? How many turns open are the pilot screws? The 550's like about 3.5 turns open in my experience.

It seems apparent that you didn't clean the carbs properly by breaking them down and cleaning them fully. Please review the carb rebuild tutorial and newbie mistakes thread linked in my signature. Maybe a light will go off in your head as to what the problem is after reviewing this information.

BTW, your bike didn't come with points. How is it that the bike now has them? Something is wrong there.

Yes the air filter is installed. I did break the carbs down but never removed the choke plungers. I'm kicking myself now though.

Yes the air filter is installed and oiled.

I have the pilot screws set at 3.5 turns out. But at idle my eyes are burning so it seems too rich.

The choke plungers move freely and seem to be closing all the way.

About the points they are wired in bypassing the ignitor. They seem to be working just fine. Bright blue spark every time.

Did you replace numbers 39 and 50 here? http://www.partsoutlaw.com/oemparts/...uretor-model-x

I didn't replace the plugs over the pilot jets but the old ones looked fine.

The needle and seats are new as are the o rings

Well I just got done tearing down my carbs and I found the problem.

One of the fuel screws was broken so the tip is stuck in the carb body.

Is there any tricks to removing the tip.

I tried using a pick and all I seemed to do is gouge the carb around the tip. Is the carb junk now that I gouged it or will it just involve me having the fuel screw adjusted differently from the rest?
