    VIN Number Location 1980 GS850G

I'm having issues trying to find the VIN number on my 1980 GS850G, I've found a frame number and an engine number, but I can't figure out how I'm supposed to register the bike without the actual VIN. Any help?

The frame # IS the VIN #-

1980 GSes didn't have the long 13-digit VINs. Suzuki didn't start using them until 1981. So what recycled64 says is true. The frame number is the VIN.

Right idea, wrong number, but the concept is true.

Suzuki started with the now-standard 17-digit numbers for the '81 model year.

If your DMV or license bureau doesn't like the shorter format, tell them to drag themselves out of their chairs and come out, take a look at the bike and trace the number on the frame for themselves.

By the way, the frame number and the engine number never matched, just in case you were wondering if it was a replacement engine.

Thanks! I've been wondering about this. I'm still skeptical on whether my motor's been replaced since I have a 1977 model bike with an engine VIN of GS750-3xxxx. Seems like the original engine would have had a lower number. The frame VIN is GS750-2xxxx so there may not be any rhyme or reason to their numbering.
