    GS1000 E or S?

Hi all, new to the forum, and I just bought my first GS, but it was just listed as a GS1000, so would like to know if it is a E or S. The problem is aI got it as an "in progress" build, so missing a few parts and fairings.

From the engine and frame number below, can anyone tell me what she is?

    Frame: GS1000-500051
ENGINE: GS1000-103206 (IM NOT 100% SURE about the "1", it could be a letter, but the paint has filled in a bit there)

The engine number is right...they didnt use letters. As for the VIN..It indicates a regular GS 1000. Had it been an "S" ( Cooley ) it would be GS 1000-52XXXX or GS 1000- 53XXXX

If it has an indentation down the sides of the tank where the badges go its either a 1978 C or E model. If it doesnt have indentations it after 78..79 or later.

Got some pictures of the body work and the bike itself as far as rims, what the brake configurationn up front is? These will help tell the story and get a better accessment for you.
    MY BIKES..1977 GS 750 B, 1978 GS 1000 C (X2)
    1978 GS 1000 E, 1979 GS 1000 S, 1973 Yamaha TX 750, 1977 Kawasaki KZ 650B1, 1975 Honda GL1000 Goldwing, 1983 CB 650SC Nighthawk, 1972 Honda CB 350K4, 74 Honda CB550

NEVER SNEAK UP ON A SLEEPING DOG..NOT EVEN YOUR OWN.

I would rather trust my bike to a "QUACK" that KNOWS how to fix it rather than a book worm that THINKS HE KNOWS how to fix it.

You have a very early 1978 GS1000E, according to this list.

Great, thanks for the help, I had a feeling it was an E. It was registered as a 1980, but it may very well be a 1978 made, but late registered.

Im actually based in Johannesburg South Africa.

On my recently acquired gs1000 the frame name plate says 2/78 frame gs1000-501612 engine gs1000-130693. When I look at pics of 78 models I noticed differences like air box with chrome side cover , coil rear shocks so can someone set me straight please thanks.78 GS1000.jpg

The chrome sided air box is 79 or 80

              The plastic box is 78

are your rear foot pegs round, or square?

Plus, it has vm carbs, so most likely a 79.

That should be a '79 having the VM carbs. You can get a complete oring kit and other goodies from a GSR member Robert Barr, through his site cycleorings.com. Not sure about the locations of Africa, but we have a couple of members from there, Flyboy is one of them. He may be a great help to you and also welcome to the site. Go to Bikecliffs site for links to help out also. http://members.dslextreme.com/users/bikecliff/

Sorry just noticed I got two new members mixed up, but the welcome and info applies to both of you. Welcome.
