GS850L front axle

    GS850L front axle

    I hope someone might have some ideas here. I am trying to remove the front wheel off my '82 GS850L. I have the brake calipers off, the axle pinch bolt / nut is loose, the castled axle nut is off. The axle will turn putting a screwdriver in the hole end of the axle but it will not pull through the forks. I have sprayed it with PB Blaster, used a block of wood with a hammer beating it and then used a bigger hammer. It will not budge.

    Any ideas / suggestions how to get it out.

      The axle is probably rusted to the spacer, I had to hacksaw through one to get it out once.

        tkent02 may be onto something. Looks like the spacer is turning along with the axle. Try griping the spacer with some channel locks while turning the axle. Might break it free. Use copious amounts of PB blaster first. Just be careful you don't grip the spacer too hard and squeeze it down. If it turns out that it can't be broken loose then you may have to cut it.

          So I took your advice on the vise grips on the spacers. After many sprayings with PB Blaster and a couple of days I was finally able to turn the spacer with out turning the axle. I also did the speedo mechanism. With a few good bangs on the axle end with a hammer I got it to budge. I sprayed some more with Blaster came back in the next morning and was able to drive the axle through. Alas. This was to replace a fork seal that was leaking. So when I removed one of the brake calipers and saw one had been seeping some ..... LOL I gotta laugh. Another can of worms I opened.

            If I can guys, one more time asking for assistance here. I have a Haynes Shop manual plus I have downloaded a copy of the service manual for a GS850G from BassCliff site. However, I do have an GS850GL Z model. There was no L model manual on his site. In my Haynes manual it shows the G model type fork which the L model is a little different. The L model has leading axle and I'm not sure what other differences.

            Does someone have fork oil volume and height measurement for the specific L model forks. Do I assume the volume and height level is the same for an L as a G ?
            Is there any difference in the air pressure as well ?

              Here is a link to a manual for the 1100G, L, and K bikes. I believe the forks are the same for the 850, but you should be able to compare what you have for the 850G to the 1100G, and if they're the same, look up the level for the 1100L.

                The 850 manual that you downloaded covers the L model as well, there is a supplement for it near the back which describes the differences between it and the 850G. And then probably another supplement for the 82 (Z) model year. Take everything the Haynes manual says with a huge grain of salt, it is wrong in many places.
