I noticed my engine putting off some smoke when I stopped at a light. I looked and found an oil leak. Does this seem to coming from the valve cover?

There are two o-rings involved, get them both.

The tachometer was loose/not screwed in all the way.Comment

That may not solve your problem. The drive shouldn't leak even with the cable disconnected. There is an oil seal (5x12x8) on the outer end and in behind there is an o-ring, not sure of the size.
Is this the correct model ?

Even if it was hanging on a nail in the shed.
If the oil seal has failed the threads might get enough of a seal to send the oil up the cable instead of to the outside.97 R1100R
