1980 GS1000G Standars cam chain tensioner - adjustment

    Hi all,
My question today is regarding the standard cam chain tensioner:

Is there any manual adjustment? or do I need to replace it with a manual tensioner?

Wee bit of noise developing lately.

    Thanks!

Check to make sure the setscrew isn't set. Some hamfists do this, and it prevents the tensioner from working. It should be backed out 1/2 turn and then the locknut locked.
Other than that it either works or it doesn't. Usually they do.
    And...
If a GS isn't making at least a wee bit of noise it isn't running.

If it's only a wee of noise bit the valves are probably too tight, which is a bad thing. Have you adjusted them lately?

Agree on all points. Auto tensioner is dead-reliable on a stock engine, but easy to install incorrectly.

Loosen the locknut on the left side. Hold it in place, turn the setscrew IN all the way, note how far you have to turn it. When it's in all the way, turn it back out 1/4 to 1/2 turn and lock it in that position.

About the only other attention it might need is to replace the o-rings every 25-30 years or so.
