Speedometer broke, decided to upgrade, question on compatability

    Hi everyone,

I've got an 82 GS850G, and once again a speedometer has failed me.. Unfortunately right before I was about to sell the bike. I figured this might be a good time to purchase a used speedometer from a unit where the face goes up higher than 85 mph. I found a few units on ebay from a 79 GS1000 that go up to 140. There are some others, and I've found nothing from my year and model, so I'll have to get something from a different bike.

My question is this: am I correct in understanding that while the tach ratios differ on different GS bikes, that the speedometers are universal (2240@60mph)? In other words, can I buy this, put it on, and have an accurate gauge of miles driven and current speed?

Also, any ideas if the cable will fit? I can't quite tell how it attaches from the picture.

    Thanks!

With the same size 19" front wheel and speedo drive being the same part number you'd think they would swap, but the gauge and cable, like you said, are different. Maybe if you use the cable for the appropriate gauge, and not for your bike it would work.
