I've owned three or four MityVac pumps, but they've all failed. Believe it or not this brass Harbor Freight pump has proven the most reliable by far.
On all these pumps, cheap and expensive, the gauge face has a brittle, astonishingly delicate plastic cover. Just save yourself the inevitable heartache and cover the gauge in a couple of layers of clear tape the first time you use it.
Also, I've found that attaching a large clear fuel filter (like for an old Gold Wing or large garden tractor) in the vacuum line near the pump helps keep dirt and rust out of the pump and provides more vacuum "storage" volume, which often comes in handy.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

+1 for the Harbor Freight pump. It is indestructible. Not so much the plastic cup though. I picked up a much better one at a swap meet.sigpic
