78 GS 1000E front master cylinder rebuild

    78 GS 1000E front master cylinder rebuild

    I have the parts to rebuild the MC however there is a thin copper plate/shim that I do not see where it goes. Is it just before the piston that has 4 small holes in it and the spring, or does it go in front of the rubber seal on the spring?

      I think it is called a check valve. It is not shown in your picture. I thought it went on top of the spring against the flat of the piston.

        a picture would be helpful.

        Did you get the right rebuild kit ?

        This one is for the 1980+ models with squared oil containers.

          I just did the MC on my 1100E. The thin copper piece went between the rubber cup and the head of the piston.

            i think I put the spring and rubber boot in backwards. Does the open end of the spring go towards the banjo bolt or does the end with the rubber boot go towards the banjo?

                On my 1100E the open end of the spring went in first, then the piston cup with the bump in the middle towards the spring (the small end of the spring seats over the bump), then the copper disc, then the piston/rod, then the gland, then the washer and finally the snap ring.

                  The disc goes between cup and the piston. It keeps the star shaped end of the piston from eating a hole in the cup.

                          That kind of day, Here is the sequence starting from the banjo opening.
                          Spring (large end) rubber cap with nipple inserted into small end of the spring, thin copper ???, piston with wiper ( large side of the wiper facing banjo hole) C-Clip, rubber dirt seal.

                              I've rebuilt the m/c on my 78 1000E but since the bore was corroded/pitted it still weeps a little. Just enough to **** me off. Is there another newer m/c that is a direct replacement? I don't want to do a complete upgrade of the front brakes, I just want to find a unit that will work with what's on the bike.
