Hi does any one know if you can drill and tap ( very carefully ) a new hole in the metal strip that is pressed into the side of the tank which the tank badge is fitted to ? would the same amount of depth where the original badge screws are be the same all the way between the two screw holes ?

It's possible I guess, the strip is spot welded onto the tank and is a uniform thickness. But remember if you drill too far, you will have a leaky tank. You would need a bottom tap of the correct thread.
