78 GS1000 unidentified parts after tune up

Hello all I want to go for a real ride, but found couple parts between starter cover and rear of cylinder 1 and 2. I adjusted valve clearances very tight on ex1 as pointed out by sharp eyes from one reader on exhaust header. I put in new points, timing set and new filter and plugs. Stock bike. And now syncing carbs. I noticed the idle creeped much higher when bike got hot. Air leak? Wonder if pilot fuel and air screw should be reset. I don't know how many turns I should be setting them at.
    Unidentified parts
Looked at carb parts list it doesn't seem to be from that. I am wooried that these parts are from valve train when I did valves.
There is a small screw in plug with a clip. The second is a thin 1/2 inch metal dowel.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

Remove any resistors and replace with some brass or metal rod close to the same diameter. Thick copper wire will work too if a strands close to that of the resistors. Cut rod to length and install into the caps. Note that 2 and 3 caps have a spring. Put spring in first, then the rod and end piece.

Wow. You guys are amazing and quick. My number 1 plug cap was a bit loose, know I know why!! Thanks I am relieved it wasn't something internal! Bike is very original to plug caps.

        Thanks guys, much appreciated.
        Bruce.
Ps I did good for quick ride and bike felt pretty good. Nice thrust. Number 4 plug is sooty when I was synchronizing carbs. All other plugs were clean. Idle circuit rich for sure. Will check plugs after a good ride to see if runs rich there too.

Use the side mixture screws ( on the side of the carbs at about a 45 degree angle near then throats ) and turn the screws OUT to lean the cylinder. Bottom pilot screws are set and forget on VM carbs. if they are about 7/8 turn out they are close to perfect. After that you tune VMs with the side mixture screws.

ThAnks for the mixture recommendation. I backed it out about half turn. Cruised, these old liter bikes are cool and responsive with these mechanical slide carbs. Pug looks much better! I need to get the carbs done and I should be good

Generally what i have found on my VM powered bikes is that around 1 1/2 to 13/4 out is pretty darn close I fine tune them with my Colortune to get the flame just on the edge of being perfect and too rich. soon as I see the flame color start to change i back the mixture screws out till the flame is blue. Then i run it up to around 4500 or so and see that the flame stays the same at cruiseing RPMs. this video is what you should expect to see when tuning a set of VM carbs.

Thanks very much for the info on turns. I don't have colortune but will try both settings and Check plugs again.

Again thanks for for all the help

If it pops thru the carbs put your hand on then slide tower and youll feel the carb shudder as it misfires. This is " usually " from being a little lean. If theres one thats popping try giving it just a slight amount of choke and see if it stops. If so, then turn the mixture screw on the offending carb in 1/8 turn and see if it goes away. Basically youre doing a poor mans "colortune" as it were. If the choke makes things worse then the cylinder is too rich and youll turn the screws out to lean it a little.
