    Preferred method and tools for getting a stripped differential drainhole repaired.

    I have this friend who swears he used a torque wrench. No matter all threads will eventually yield to cycling from removal in insertion.

    He has a 12x 1.5 9 mm deep hole that will require a clean up with an oversize replacement as that is likely the cheapest easiest option.

    What have you all used in the past to repair your drain hole?

    Helicoil or Timesert, both work well, maybe Timesert would be better in this application.

    When installing in a drain pan it's important not to have a 12mm deep insert in a 9mm drain other wise it won't fully drain, so you can buy the right length or if not available carefully shorten it before installation.

      Yes the 9 mm is a must as going past that will hit a seal holder and make a damned mess of the works. If diffs were cheap on ebay it would be easy but god knows whats out there likely has threads that are about ready to pop. Shipping is a real problem as well.

        Could one tap that 12 mm hole which is .472 inches....to a half inch?

        And.....just curious what machine are you working on that has a differential?

          a 1912 stutz bearcat.................no wait a ZG1000 concours. I was afeared to mention brand in case the smartest person on the subject matter was also a hyper-zealous brand loyalist.

          Oh and there can be no inches. We have no inches here.

            Understood.....I am a Canadian happily transplanted to the sunshine of California. Metric in Canada...Law of the Land almost. I am thinking that Harleys use SAE hardware / fasteners... Just thinking out loud. Find a shop that is what...Pre mid 80's......old tool boxes...gotta be something.
