    Where does this go

With help from here I have my GS550 engine mounted but I see in some pics of fixings a bracket that I have in my box of bits but I am not sure where this goes. Thanks

Is it just the one bracket, or is there a matching one?

I don't recognise that one. What year is your 550?

It looks like a front engine mounting bracket. But since you said the engine is mounted it can't be that. Maybe a power steering pump bracket from a 74 Chevy Impala...? 😀

If it wasn't so thick, it almost looks like a broken-off arm from the headlight mount.

The thickness looks about right for an engine mount. You sure it came off your bike, or was it in a box of parts that came with the bike?

Looked at mine. Horn bracket is flat and doesnt have any holes. Engine mounts dont have any bends in them.

As stated we need to know what year the bike is. I am pretty sure it is not off an 81 pr 82 as I have torn four of those apart and this part doesn't come from these years. Certainly not an engine mount for those years.

Looks like an exhaust bracket. Did your GS550 have the original exhaust?

Older ones didnt have brackets. The mount was integral to the pipes and it bolted straight into the frame.

I thought I had better explain what has been going on with me and my GS550. I bought this in crates nearly two ago to build up as a cafe racer/sprint bike. Not a great fan of chopping up classic bikes but someone had already beaten me to it. The back had gone, brackets had been welded on for a big Suzuki tank and just about every fixing bracket on the frame had been chopped off leaving bits sticking out everywhere to rip your hands on. I bought it because it was small money and came with a load brand new cafe racer bits.
I was doing a TOTAL rebuild at the time on TZR250 1KT which I finished a couple of months ago – turned really well. So then I got the crates together to start on the GS550 (not a range of bikes I know much about but I have always liked them). Last year in a couple of breaks I turned four lumps of corroded carbs into a smart good looking set and the starter was in the same state but now works well and looks good. The frame etc. is solid but scruffy so my intention is to build it up to completion (I will be welding bits on and cutting some off) and when finished as I want it I will strip it down and have the frame powder coated and other stuff sprayed and plated and then put it bake together with the intention of sprinting it next year.
So a couple of months ago started the rebuild but then I had diagnoses of the BIG C This has slowed me down considerably – good days, bad days, two/three a week in hospital. The only thing I can find time and energy for is going in the garage and getting on with it. So there are and will be questions (although I have a clear idea on what I want to do) and I very much appreciate your answers and comments but I apologise I can’t always immediately reply to them.
The bike is a 1980 550T (E-02) with Mikuni BS32SS carbs. Thanks for your patience.

Ok, threads a little old but I was changing the oil on my 85 gs550e and saw the bracket and recognized it from this thread. It is a motor mount from the frames right side to the engine just above the clutch.20180721_153337.jpg
