Rolling Resistance

I have two GS550T's. The red one rolls in neutral very smoothly with next to no resistance. The black one rolls in neutral with a lot more resistance. The problem is somewhere in the rear wheel/drive as the front wheel rolls with no resistance. The rear axle nuts is not overly tight from what I can determine. I am pretty sure the rear disk isn't the problem either as I disconnected the caliper and swung it off the disk and the resistance did not go away.

So my theory is there is some engine problem or the bearings are the problem. Not convinced on the bearings being the issue as there is no side to side play in the wheel on the axel.

Is this a common issue?

It's possible the internal spacer is either missing or installed incorrectly causing binding in the wheel assembly, have you pulled the rear wheel out to investigate yet?

That would tell you if the problem is wheel or transmission/engine related hopefully.

Thanks for the reply David. I did have it apart to clean it whe I was doing my restoration. I think I will try taking the chain off tomorrow and see whether that results in a difference, if not then it must be in the axel wheel/assembly. I'll then disassemble it to see.

had this happen once, found that a new rear wheel bearing wasn't fully seated due to a burr in the bore. this caused outer race to bind with inner race when snugging up rear axle nut. try backing off the axle nut 1/2 turn to test this theory, and make repairs as needed.
