Wes Cooley
Can anyone help me determine authentic or not....Just bought 1980 GS1000S everything appears to be correct, only weird thing is on title the vin is NGS1000-530649 which falls in correctly for 1980 Wes bike I believe but I thought 1980 was T model?? Any help would be greatly appreciated on deciphering fake from real deal.Tags: None

We have a member that has been compiling a list of "S" bikes, he will be along shortly to confirm.
In the meantime, I am not accustomed to seeing an N in front of the GS, not sure if that indicates the '79 model year or not.
Real quick and easy way to determine the year is to look at the carbs.
If you have VM carbs, it's a '79. If you have BS series carbs, it's an'80.

Was some discussion recently (? about bike at that wiscson yard?) about how to tell and actaul Wess Cooley from some other model with Cooley parts.
Folks here know.
I think I recall the main clue was related to the shift lever.
So post some pics here. And knowledgeable folks will give definite answer.http://webpages.charter.net/ddvrnr/GS850_1100_Emblems.jpg

Wes Cooley
Thanks for the great info guys! Was able to confirm my number 2 Wes Cooley bike is original and in the registry. I did not buy from MN salvage yard, everything there seems more like parts bikes to me. I was surprised someone had all the bodywork and gauges from a Wes Cooley to make that clone bike, everyone mentioned it was missing rear sets but on a 79 model there were none, owners have swapped carbs and exhaust so many times its hard telling whats real or not, and not to mention some of the vin numbers on E models fall within the range of S models I believe.
