    Is this Speedo actually from a GS?

    Hey folks,
    I managed to completely f@#$@#$k up the insides of the speedometer on my GS450L by staying above 80mph for too long, the spring that returns the needle back to zero is now a gordian knot.

    I bought a replacement off ebay with a higher top speed, seller said it was for a GS450 and other models but the diameter is a bit larger than the original. I'd like to find a black cover as well as the chrome end piece for it. Any ideas? Original part numbers for my bike were 34151-45300 and 34193-45300, respectively.

    For this new meter, OD is ~93mm for the white plastic, spacing between the mount pins is 76.5mm, speed goes up to 140mph/220kph and it has two holes to plug lights into vs the original one.

    Does anyone know what the new end cap and cover part numbers would be for this gauge? Thank you, and stay healthy!

    Is WHAT speedo off a GS? I don't see any picture.

      Can you really goof up your speedometer by keeping the needle pegged at 85mph? That's the first I've heard about this... My 81 1100e has a 85mph speedometer. It has seen a lot of time above 85mph. I haven't had any problems with the speedometer "spring". I always thought it was fun to see how long it would take before the needle would move off the peg while slowing down from a high speed blast!

          40 yrs. ago, I was proud & bragged about my speedometer, ("80 GS1100E"), constantly pegged from home to town, appx. 15 mi. on relatively crooked country road. After 50K mi. no speedometer problems.

            I've had the speedo apart on my 450t and since you're familiar with the spring it sounds like you have too. The guts of the speedo and the face are all one piece along with the studs that secure it into the plastic casing. Could you take the guts out of the new speedo and put them into the plastic housing of the old one? Seems to me the diameter of the face is your biggest determiner of that question, the old housing could be driller or otherwise modified if the stud spacing is different.

              I don't think so; I've tried. Even got out of a 90 mph speeding ticket when the cop saw it and said, "I guess you didn't know you were doing over 90. I'll write you up for 80."

              Of course, I'm still glad I upgraded to the 140.

                  The face (the part with lines and text) does seem to have a different diameter. I'll take a look later once I get it apart to adjust the mileage anyway.

                  I was considering adding a "detent" into the speedo/tach mount, as the stud spacing is in fact different. However, this isn't load bearing and so long as I can catch enough of the mount.. Something like this:


                  Regardless, I need to cover that naked white plastic and add a chrome cap to the end. If they don't exist, then I guess I've no choice but to shrink the face diameter down.

                    huh. I'd expect that to fit among several models...the white case is my first clue-the orange ones (for gsx400E are truly different and seem hard for me to find as speedo or Tach)

                    I'd goto CMNSL and check that part number-they also have the casing and chrome back listed but both are likely unavailable there It's important when on EBAY to be prepared and very sure before buying.

                          OK, now it's time for THE REST OF THE STORY.

                          I can (sorta) see how a spring might get wound up if you were to take the needle quite a bit past the end of the scale, but let's face it:
                          that's a 450, it will barely make it TO the end of the scale. It probably won't go very far past the end, and certainly not for very long.

                          What were you doing that had it going so fast, and for so long?

                            Just cruising

                            Took some nice photos once I got to where I was going, biggest wind farm I've ever seen, ever. It stretched out to the hills and beyond. This photo is off Wiki, I don't want to copy the photos off my phone right now.

                              Hah! Got THAT one right. It's that big wind funnel near Berdoo where the hot air rising out of the L.A. Basin makes for an almost constant wind. Been since the early 90's since I was out there, excellent riding out that way.
