    GS550 oil window

    Hi all,
the oil level window on my 81 550 is cloudy as hell and makes it very tricky for me to see the level.

What is the best way to sort this? Cleaning or replace?

You can do either. Clean the inside with a cotton bud soaked in petrol or fit a new one - cost less than a tenner.

Mine would always self clean after a carb float would stick open and fill the crankcase with gasoline. Not that I advocate pouring gas in your crankcase on purpose but sometimes there are small benefits to the normal PITA motorcycle problems.

Try adding about 1/2 quart of automatic tranny fluid before your next oil change. Run it for a couple of miles and then do the oil change. The detergent in the tranny fluid does wonders, at least it has worked for me a couple of times! As a side benefit it will help de-sludge the engine too!

When I die, just cremate me and put me in my GS tank. That way I can go through these carbs, one more time!https://www.thegsresources.com/_forum/core/images/smilies/cool.png

Inject Lysol directly into your crankcase. Or Clorox. (Don't do this.)

            Thanks guys.
It's a bit annoying that the garage didn't think to do this when they did the oil change.

I'm now maintaining the bike myself so it'll be a priority at the end of summer
