Are the two rear fuel tank mounts a structural part of the frame? I only ask as they seem to be rather substantial and welded to an intersection of the frame.

Well, it is rather solidly mounted.
Are you asking because you are interested in removing that part of the frame?
I have not paid any particular attention to exactly what is braced by what in that area, but I wouldn't be removing very much framework unless you were adding some bracing nearby.

Are you talking about those two tabs where the bolts at the rear of the tank go?
They sort of stick out from the frame, but if you lopped them off it doesn't seem that it would weaken the frame; they don't connect to anything else.
There's sort of a cross-brace a little further forward with a rubber cushion attached. If you're talking about that, it bridges two very strong frame tubes, but it certainly doesn't seem to be something essential to the frame's strength at that point, as long as you don't chop up the frame tubes on the way out.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.
