GS400 Exhausts (are they the same?)

    Hi.
Im trying to restore a 78 GS400 C model. I was using a parts book for a B model as i couldnt source one for a C model . I recently purchased an exhaust not thinking there would be a difference(stupid me).The B consits of 2 seperate down pipes and 2 seperate silencers, the C has the pipes and silencers as an all in one setup with a balance pipe joining them.As far as i can see, they both look the same apart from the balance pipe.
Will the B exhaust still fit my C model and whats the purpose of the balance pipe??The one i bought is an original NOS Suzuki part still in its wrapper,it was a one off private purchase so cant take it back!!!
    Any help much appreciated...CHEERS ROSKO

P.S. Got the correct parts book now!!!!!

The purpose for the pipe connecting the two exhausts is so the exhuast as it exits pulls the exhaust out of the other pipe. Its a performance thing.

I've got the factory manual for the 400B and it has a supplement about the C that mentions the difference in the exhaust system. I'll check it tonight and let you know if it says anything about whether you can use it. I'm pretty sure it would fit, but there may be other changes (like carb jetting) you'd have to make. As jayrbaker says, it was done to improve performance and they rarely change the output (exhaust) without changing the input(airbox and/or jetting).

Do you still have the B parts book? I'd be interested...

        Cheers folks

Once i get the engine back in i`ll see if its a straight fit. If i cant get the exhaust exchanged anywhere i`ll run it for a while and see what happens!!

I plan to keep the B parts book as there`s a couple of pages missing from the C book. If you want to purchase a new copy, check out : www.mercianmanuals.co.uk . They carry a good stock of parts books and workshop manuals for most bikes, especially classics.(they have B and C parts books now)

According to the factory shop manual the main changes between the 400B and 400C are:

          valve timing,
          cam height,
          the exhaust,
          #110 main jet (B uses a 112.5),
          front hub,
brake disc (one-piece and thinner on the C), and mounting bolts,
          and swing arm spacers.

Other than not using the B cam in the C, and the hubs, all other parts are interchangeable between both models. So, the exhaust should fit and work fine..

Many thanks Paul, very useful information.
None of the books i have, has that information. I knew there was some slight differences but not what.

            Cheers.....ROSKO.............

Are the part #s on the exhausts close? I got an exhaust off an early 400E that only had 1 hole in the back and they easily replaced a set with 4 hole pipes. Neither sets of brackets fit but I was able to pound one set flat to finish the swap.

The Sinkei OEM exhausts I had were only different by a couple of values on the last digit.
