stator problems
I was wanting to advise everyone of a problem i had with mine. wasn`t charging enough to keep the battery up. got the manual out and READ IT! it said to disconnect the 3 wires coming from the stator and crank the engine and at 5k you should get around 75v. AC between any 2 of the wires. i did this and found that i only had power coming from only 2 combinations but not the third even though i read the same ohms which ever way i connected it. the stator was bad and i replaced it. i`m saying this because i noticed that ya keep saying to ohm it, but i dont think that it will tell anything exept short to ground. but even with a new stator i only got around 25v or 30v. hope this helps.Tags: None

Re: stator problems
My factory manual states disconnect the stator from the R/R. Run the engine at 5K rpm. Stator output should be at least 80 volts AC between each of the three legs.

Resistance will not indicate if a coil is bad, because it can burn up and still have continuity. Residual carbon traces left over from smoked wiring will read resistance but not conduct electricity. Do the A/C test.

This would appear to be the boat I'm in now. Ohm'd out fine but no recharge. I'll be doing the voltage test this weekend and most likely going to Electrex.com and plunking down $155 on a new one.

on the ohm test you can have a crack in the coating and still show good ohms. but it will show shorted to ground.
