'78 GS1000 - Can I omit the oil pan gasket?
I've got a '78 GS1000 vintage race bike. It's got an oil leak around the pan. Looked like the drain plug was starting to strip out a bit, so I took the pan off today. I had intended to reinstall it with Three Bond sealer instead of a real pan gasket after installing an oversized drain plug. The problem though is that the pan gasket appears to act as a type of baffle around the oil pick up screen. Do I need to track down a pan gasket? Does anyone have one left over from a complete gasket kit. I've only been able to find complete engine gasket kits and I'd rather not drop that kind of cash if I don't need to. Does Suzuki still stock pan gaslets? Thanks TracyTags: None

Yep, you need to have a gasket there. :-) Call around town to the local bike shops. Some shops have a computer controlled gasket cutting machine. All they will have to do is select you bike and the gasket you need from a blow up diagram and put the right thickness material in the feed. It will auto scroll the casket cutouts. A pan gasket is usually about $8.

I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself than be crowded on a velvet cushion. H.D.T.

i had similar problem on my 1100e....
GET THE PAN HELICOILED, a oversize plug on a aluminum ban can crack the pan.
keep old gasket and run a thin bead of silicone on the gasket surface.

Thanks for the advice guys. I was able to get one at BikeBandit.com for about $7. I had to buy a couple of other things, so the $6 in shipping wasn't a big deal.
