intake leaks and carb issues, 101

so following my earlier thread, I wanted to ask, what other possibilities are there for intake leaks or idle problems if it was not a leak at the intake manifold boots?

just to reiterate, I have a lean condition when my engine gets good and warmed up, after highway speeds, that causes 3000 rpm idle and it revves upon pulling the choke to 5000 rpm, then chokes out and dies if I hold it... it pulls well with throttle, and the 3000 rpm doesn't seem to be for real, as it dies down when I let out on the clutch as if it was idling normally, not taking off as if I throttled to 3000. so I wonder if there's not just one cylinder getting over lean and dragging the rest up with it?

the carbs have not been fully disassembled, but were cleaned enough to get it running again... could be some fault, maybe idle circuit or choke?

thanks a ton, I may have to buy new boots, but I want to check any other possibilities first!!

You could try taking the carbs completely apart and doing the full carb dunking and cleaning routine. Maybe you didn't get it all last time. Symptoms sound more like an intake leak but it doesn't cost much to do the carbs, just some time and some "fun" getting the carb rack on and off the bike. You can get a can of Berryman's with the dipping basket for I think $20. I've seen it at McGuckins. The auto parts places should have it also. If the carbs are still a bit plugged up maybe that could be causing it.

remind me again, do I need to replace all the rubber if I do the berryman's? not that it's a problem, just to be sure aforehand...

      thanks!

I always take all the o-rings out of the carbs anyway. This allows the best cleaning as all the pasages are open. Then I evaluate all the o-rings. Robert Barr just hooked me up with a new kit the other day!
