    I think I screwed something up...but what?

Alright folks, I need some help here.....
    1980 GS850 L
    ----
Finished my valve clearance the other night (2am), and today, I put everything back together on my bike. I had taken apart my carbs over the winter as well.

To make things brief, I eventually got it started (after failed bump start attempts, and cranking it a lot,). gas started puddling, but that was because of a fuel line hose I had replaced. fixed that. changed oil again so no gas would be in crankcase (although the oil ended up being clean)

Got it running again. I notice now, that there is a LOT of clatter when its running. I pretty much had to max out the idle speed adjuster knob to keep it running, and also i had FORGOT to screw out 2 of the adjuster-screws on the carbs #-o now set them at about 1.5-2 turns out on each

Fix that, and then keep it running for a little (still really noisy).
As soon as I try and let go of the clutch into 1st gear, it stalls.
    ----------

Now, I think it might be these things:

Valve clearance : although I got it right after, the readings changed on me after I took out shims and switched them up.

Carbs: Maybe something to do with carbs, but not sure? I have a synch device, but want to fix the clatter first.

++++EDIT++++I think clatter might be a result from rebuilding my cam chain tensioner.....gonna take it out, and double check it.....++++ still wont pop into 1st though....

PLEASE HELP!!! THE SUN IS SHINING NOW AND THERE IS NO SNOW!!!!! [-o<

What does the compression look like? did you check it before and after the valve adjustment?

Possibly the cam tensioner, be careful that it does not jump a tooth.

Speaking of teeth, did you have occation to remove the cams? could the engine be out of time?

Just discovered mine needs a clutch and a carb cleaning, first warm day of the year and the carbs are leaking out at a red light, so I share your pain.

REcheck the cam timing--- It could havve slipped a tooth when you had the CCT out

The clutch packs may be stuck together from sitting, so it stalls when the trans is put in gear, did you do a manuel sync. of the carbs after reassembly, if not being way off will make every thing rattle, did you do the chain tensioner function check after you installed it???If the shim reading changed it may be that when measured there was the normal oil under the shim and when you replaced the shim you wiped the oil out of the shim bucket then put the new shim in, you alway want to leave that oil in the bucket or re-oil the new shim on both sides, then when finished rotate the engine a few times and recheck things will settle

gonna recheck clearance when engine is cold tonight, and recheck tensioner. DOH!!! I didnt loosen that locking screw after I installed it #-o

When I was turning the crankshaft doing clearance, every half turn, the chain would sorta loosen an then snap back.....would this mean it has skipped a tooth?

If it skipped a tooth, and threw the camshaft timing off, how could I fix that?

First, do the timing mark check as shown in the manual. If you have skipped a tooth, you will need to pull the cam chain tensioner (or at least back it off, but I would pull it) to provide some slack in the chain. Then lift the chain off the cam sprockets (one at a time) and reset the timing to the correct tooth. Then reinstall the tensioner and unscrew the locknut this time. Make sure you hand crank the motor through a couple of revolutions at least after resetting the timing and then check with the timing marks again to be sure you got it correct before putting the valve cover back on.
