    Gear slipping/Carb Sync

I have an 85 450A (automiatic shaft drive). It runs fine in low then when you shift into high it will slip out of gear. When you run it on the center stand it will stay in gear.

Also how do you sync the carbs? I have no tach onthis hike so I have no idea what the RPMs are. I have read the info on this site about syncing, and I don't have access to the sync tool.

How should the plugs look when the engine runs rich/lean? I have a small amount of white smoke coming out the exhaust.

If someone has a manual for this bike could you scan the images of how the gear shifter connects on the tourqeconverter side and email it to me. The manual I have is for non-automatic chain driven bikes.

You can buy a synch tool on denniskirk.com for around $45. Mine works fine. I don't think you need a tach to synch them. I set mine at idle and then check if they are all consistant with some throttle applied in nuetral. It's a simple process, but involves taking the tank off. I now check the synch whenever I have the tank off, I can check and reset it in about 5 minutes. The biggest PITA is attaching the vacumm line connectors. I'm thinking about a permanant mounting of them.

The plugs will be dark and sooty if rich and white and crusty if lean. Perfect burn will get you nice mocha color.

White smoke out the exhaust indicates unburnt fuel coming out the pipe. Black smoke indicates oil seeping past either the rings or the valve seals. Does the white smoke go away when hot? It's common for these bikes to spit a little smoke for the first few minutes. Does it smell of gas?

Black smoke should indicate unburnt fuel, oil is a more lingering greyish (sometimes appears a bit white) cloud. True white smoke is usually coolant, but if you are burning coolant on a GS...

The smoke goes away after the engine has run for bout 5min. Both plugs are a black sooty color. How much does a shop charge to sync? What do you call the sync too, maybe I can pick up one at a swap meet coming up or onebay?

Found a sync tool on ebay. That issue will be resolved soon. Still don't know about the tourqe converter issue. At a loss on what to do.

OOO slipping in gear is not good.
if the suzuki auto transmission is done like Honda did theirs, it has hydraulicly engaged clutches for engament of the gears, when these clutches (like a car transmission) wear out the transmission will slip.

I just checked and it apears to use somewhat normal gears with engagement dogs.
possible worn engagement dogs or something in the shift mechanism.

I was looking at pictures from a chain drive repair manual and where the shift lever actually rotates the gears there are the two wheels one has the spring connected to it and it puts pressure on the larger wheel. On the larger wheel there is a bar on the out side. It shows that the bar lines up with the center pin on the smaller wheel. I tried to get mine to line up but it just won't go. I am wondering if since it isn't lining up it isn't allowing me to shift all the way into gear. (this is all on the tourqe converter/points side of the engine inside the cover) I really need a gasket for this side but I am unable to locate one, the dealer ship says it has been discontinued, so does bikebandit and alpha sports. I tried to make one but it didn't work out to well. I have just been using RTV, which makes a big mess most of the time. If I could find a picture of the gasket needed I can blow it up to actual size and cut a gasket, but haven't found one yet.
