Changing oil question.

I just got a 1983 GS650G last weekend.

I have ridden a few times in short bursts.

My question is this, the previous owner put mobile1 synthetic oil in it along with a new filter before I bought it. After reading a bit on this site, I have found that may not be the best oil to use due to it causing the clutch to slip excessively. Now can I just change the oil back to normal dino oil without changing the filter?

Also, what would be the best weight oil to use?

The bike has 27,000 miles on it.

You can use Mobil 1, but it must be the 15-50 with the red cap. It's the only Mobil one that isn't energy conserving. Oils labled as "energy conserving" have a polymer that can make our friction clutches slip.

I use Castrol 10-40 and change every 1000-1500 miles.

the 'Red Cap' 15w-50 works (and has been) great in mine. If your clutch slips you have other issues. If you insist on going dino, teh above posted recommendation is ok, along with just about any 10w-40, 15w-40 Nationally branded oil that does not have the 'starburst' symbol on it.

I use pennzoil 10-40...could someone take a picture of this 'starburst' symbol for me and post it here, I am not sure what I am looking for on the bottle? :?

I use Mobil 1 15-50 and I noticed much better clutch action and much smoother shifting than with dino I originally put in it.

So, next question.......I feel kinda dumb for asking this, I just havent gotten my Clymer manual in the mail yet.

How do you change the oil and filter......and how much oil does it use?

the newest standards are SM/ILSAC GF-4

all gasoline motoroils are backwards compatible

if the engine says it requres SH and you use SL, you're fine

with a diesel, if it says to use CI-2, you had best use CI-2 and not CI-4 or there might be problems with the engine later on.

well, as to what the star looks like....


if you can afford to keep using synthetic, you might as well, although its unecessary.


if your gonna switch, you should change the oil filter. if you want a cheap source of filters (if you order 10) after you do this oilchange, go to

regardless of whether you use syn or regular, changing the oil AND filter often is key to a long engine life.

There is a plate on the front of the engine with 5 nuts holding it on. The oil filter is behind that. Its behind the exhaust pipes so it can be a bit of a pain. Careful with those studs and nuts when you are removing and reinstalling the filter as they strip easily. The amount of oil to use should be stamped right on the engine near the oil fill hole on the right side. I fill mine up to the top of the window when I change the filter then run it a while and check it again. My GS750 says it takes 3200mL.
