A quest for a petcock kit

    I need a petcock or kit for a 1978 GS550E.

Cycle recycle has kits or replacements for many models but not this one.

    I am looking for suggestions.

    Thanks

It looks like you could use the one for the '78 GS750. The petcock part numbers are different, but the part numbers for the o-ring on the handle, the main seal behind the handle, and the gasket that goes between the petcock and the tank are all the same for both models. Neither schematic shows or lists the diaphram ans its o-ring.

Do you need a complete rebuild kit? If you can tell where it's leaking you might be able to get away with just one or two parts...

It isn't leaking it just doesn't let out gas when it is not on prime. I think that is probably a bad plan to go with for the long term.

I will try the 78 750 kit and expect good things.

      Thanks

Have you tried using a vacuum pump on the vacuum hose leading to the petcock to see if it lets gas flow when there's a vacuum? If it still doesn't and the vacuum hose is OK, it's probably the diaphram.

When I replaced all the parts with the K&L kit I problems with it leaking and it was very hard to turn. I think the main seal (the big round one with the 4 holes in it) from the kit was the problem. I put the original one back in and it's been good.

        Good luck
