I have an 82 gs 750t and thanks to all of you and your answers it tooks it's first short test ride this Saturday. Upon return from 6-7 miles in about 55 degree temps the engine seemed fairly hot. This is my first older bike so not sure how hot the thing is supposed to run. I changed all fluids and went with a 20w-50 oil prior to the run. How can I tell if my engine and oil are at regular temps or running too high. Or if the oil is actually getting where it should? After all this work I don't want to take any chances. There doesn't seem to be any way to gauge temps on this thing.

well, if your running 20w50 , you should be fine. your running an air-cooled motor, so it will feel quite hot to the touch after its nice an warmed up.
unless you live in the middle of a desert, i would stick with 20w50, as its pretty thick stuff, and will lubricate the engine at high temps well.

Your oil temp is what is to be watched as well as overall engine. As the man says, it is air cooled so it will give off that heat from the engine mass itself as opposed to a radiator on a liquid cooled unit. If you want to be really sure, get access to a thermometer either contact or one of those that you just point and read your crankcase heat to get a reading on oil temp. Remember that the biggest advantage to synthetic oils is that they continue to lubricate at a much higher temp that conventional oils so therefore lends them well to air cooled engines. What factors make an engine run hot? Too far retarded timing. Too lean a mixture. Lack of lubrication which brings up the point that you could check the oil preasure to be sure that it is getting around the engine doing its job keeping metal apart and extracting heat from hot areas. Reading your plugs will tell you if things are getting melty in there also. There is a good chance that everything is O.K.Comment

Thanks for all the answers it gives me more to go on. One thing I did go back to check was oil level. As I had this thing completely apart and replacing all gaskets and side covers as well as oil pan. Then changed the fluids and new filter, I then put in the recommended amount of oil but as I was looking last night much of that seems to have been absorbed mysteriously a little opn the low side. So I added about .5 to .75 of a quart and it seems to be a little cooler (not much) but here are none of the ticking continuing to run or that sort of thing. This is my first air cooled bike so I may be a little over zealous with worry. My other thing is this bike seems to get to red line fast, again most of my other bikes are more modern with extremely high redlines, but is this normal, how hard can you wring one of these bad boys out?????Comment

well, if you are giving it all, it takes a few short seconds to redline in 1st, and then your pretty much redlining it right away, all the way up the gears if you keep the throttle open. 8O
my engine ticks a bit after I shut it down ....its always done this though, as far as I can remember.
I am switching to 15-50 soon though, so that'll probably help a bit.

Hey Poot!
A little bit of ticking is normal, but when I got my bike it ticked like a clock.
It had a straight through muffler on it with standard jeting.
Ended up 2 sizes biger on the mains, and lifted the needle one notch.Now it's spot on.
The last owner had just rebuilt the head after burning the valves(Gee I wonder why)Comment
