    Running better but still off?

    Well last fall my bike was running fine. It started running rough so I looked at the plugs. They were all soot fouled. Not oil fouled. I put fresh plugs in and no change. I checked the intake seals and sure enough it was leaking big time. Thats odd the plugs would be lean with an itake leak. I let it rest all winter and figured I would get back at it in the spring.

    Recently I put new O-rings in w-grease, put fresh filter oil in the filter, made sure the carbs were not clogged, and put it all back together. I also checked that they are synchronized, and re-checked all the intake seals before and after the carbs. Its all sealed up tight.

    The bike is running, but it only runs at low idle if I feather the throtle, or tighten the throtle cable ot keep it up above stalling. It seems to run fine when going through the gears.

    When I adjust the main throtle screw it has no affect. I run the screw all the way in or out and it wont idle up or down. I'm not sure whats going on. Any suggestions would be a help.

    Something is up big time with your carbs. If the main idle screw doesn't change engine rpm's, I'd pull those carbs off and see whats up. I have a feeling your throttle linkage is all out of whack. Might not have to pull the carbs to see whats happening, but the tank at the least.

      Needs to be leaned.

      Well I talked to the neighbor. He seems to think that I need to lean the jets down two sizes. When I fouled the plugs last year I was running on the stock jets at this higher Wyoming altitude. The bike was originaly bought in Cleaveland Ohio, + I rode it in Texas two summers ago.

      Does this sound right? If so what size am I currently running, VS the size I should go to in order to lean it out.

      I need it to be spelled out for me as I have never re-jetted carbs before. I have only cleaned them and gotten them to run fine on the stock parts.

        Rejetting should be the last thing you do. If there is a problem rejetting will only complicate things.

        Ask a local shop if they rejet bikes when they bring them in new. Odds are they don't. If they do, I stand corrected.

        First things first. Make sure you have plenty of fuel. Turn the petcock to PRI and if the problems go away it is the vacuum assist petcock. You may not be getting fuel at idle because the petcock is shutting off.

        Since you had the carbs off, make sure you put the linkage and cables back on correctly. That was the last thing you would do and if your in a hurry to get back on the bike you may have made a mistake. The carb rebuilding pages here on the gsresources will show how to connect them.

          it did run fine last year.

          I ran fine on the stock jets last year for a while. I suppose I should sort this out first. The petcock is new due to it failing again over the winter. I'll try taking it back appart and making sure the linkage is set right. + I'll run it on prime.

          I have a feeling my air filter is the root of all evil here. Best I can tell it's clean, oiled, and instaled properly.
