I grab it on opposite sides, squeeze in some, but mostly push sideways hard. If it's pliable enough, that creates a gap and/or raises it out of the groove far enough that I can push it up with my thumb and get it started.

It might not be strong enough, but you might try a popcicle stick. It would be less likely to scratch the fork or damage the cover. I have a bag of them I use for all sorts of stuff...
